Trees And Cars. Really? What Do Trees Have To Do With Cars?

by | Jan 22, 2023

Every car has to park somewhere. I was recently going for an exploration with my kids and parked under a red maple tree. Generally a sturdy tree, not particularly known for breaking without cause. It was a windy day though. A very windy day. Was it wise to stay here, or should I move over a few spots? I quickly scanned the tree and gave a quick walk around. No alarm bells were set off, so I shut the engine and we got out the kites.

This got me thinking though. What would have told me to move the car? What simple rules could others keep an eye out for when parking their cars on a windy day?

If a tree has dead limbs in it, might move the car. If there are holes and cavities in the trunk or limbs, might move the car. If there are mushrooms growing out of the roots, the base of the tree, the main trunk or large branches, might move the car. If there are long branches sticking out by themselves, swaying hard in the wind, might move the car. If the ground around the tree is heaving up and down in the wind, move the dang car!

This is not a complete list and is not intended to cause panic, nor is it made to dismiss other red flags that are not mentioned. Use your best judgment and trust your gut if something does not seem right. Most importantly, observe your surroundings, make your call, and go have fun. It’s good kite flying weather!
