The more mulch the better, right? Wait! We don’t need more volcanic activity. Mulch volcanoes are not helping your tree! They can actually lead to harmful root growth and disease activity. They are certainly good for the mulch company, but not your wallet or healthy growth. Mulch is beneficial to your trees for many reasons. It can keep weeds away, help hold onto soil moisture, add nutrition to your root systems, and keep soil temperatures more stable. Just like most things in life, however, too much of good thing, can be, well, not a good thing. If mulch is mounded up along the base of a tree it can trap moisture along the bark and lead to decay and fungus growth. It can also lead to roots growing around the tree… this is not good. Why? You wouldn’t want roots growing around your neck, am I right? A good mulching will be 2 to 3 inches thick and not come into contact with the stem of the tree.
